China looks to straw as clean energy source

Chinanews, Xi'an, Apr. 10 (By Feng Yin) - The largest
environmentally-friendly straw power plant in China will be built in
Xi'an. Investment in the plant has reached 470 million yuan, and its
annual generation capacity is expected to total nearly 250 million
kilowatt hours after completion. Not only will it alleviate the tense
situation of electric shortages, but it will also help protect the
environment while increasing farmers' incomes.
Shaanxi is a large agricultural province and has abundant straw
resources. There are more than four million mu (2.668 billion Square
meters) of farmland in Xi'an alone and about 2.5 million tons of straw,
primarily corn straw, in autumn. Usually farmers burn the straw on the
spot after harvest, which causes uncontrollable fires in addition to
seriously polluting the environment.
Research conducted by the International Energy Agency indicates that two
tons of straw will yield the same caloric output as one ton of standard
coal when burned. However, the average sulfur content of straw is just
0.38%, much lower than that of coal. If 200 kilotons of straw are burned
every year, it would equal 100 kilotons of coal consumption, more than 60
tons of sulfur dioxide emissions as well as 400 tons of smoke and dust
emissions would be eliminated.
