Chinanews, Luoyang, April 16 - The Monument Marking the Eastern Starting
Point of the Silk Road was completed at Tangsimen in Luoyang of Henan
Province on April 15, with several hundred people being there to witness
the moment of history.
The monument is some 3.5 m tall, 1.25 m wide and 0.3 m thick.
Luoyang is one of the most famous ancient capitals of China, and also one
of the oldest. It is said that silk trade with the West in Luoyang
started in the early Shang Dynasty(16th BC-11th BC). Tangsimen stands at
the junction of the ruins of several ancient cities and the Grand Canal
built in the Sui Dynasty (581 - 618). The market places of Luoyang were
well known in the world as early as in the Han Dyansty (206 BC - 220 AD).
Luoyang's glory lay not only in its flourishing business acitivities.
With several royal temples, it also used to be a religious and cultural
center of China.
Currently, China is applying for the inclusion the Silk Road on the
intangible cultural heritage list of the UNESCO, and Luoyang will become
a tourist resort after approval of the application, as it is the starting
point of the Silk Road.
