Hong Kong's unemployment rate drops to a 3-year low
www.chinanews.cn 2005-02-22 12:35:49
Chinanews, Hong Kong, Feb.21 (By Fang Qingmu) - Hong Kong's employment
situation continues to improve. The latest statistics released by the
Hong Kong SAR revealed that Hong Kong's unemployment rate declined from
last October to December's 6.5% to last November to this January's 6.4%,
the lowest in the last 3 years.
On Feb.21 Tang Ying-yen, Hong Kong SAR's financial secretary, said that
in the past year 100,000 more people were employed in Hong Kong,
indicating continuous improvement of the labor market. However, as Hong
Kong's economic structure is in transition, the issue of employment in
the future would present a challenge to all concerned. The Hong Kong SAR
government will work closely with all sectors of society to contribute to
a prosperous economy and to create more employment opportunities.
As for Hong Kong's employment prospect this year, Tang Ying-yen said he
was prudently optimistic. He also believed that Hong Kong's economy would
continue to change for the better. As for the tourism industry, the labor
market there would continually improve owing to the opening of the Disney
theme park.
