Trains running on Qinghai-Tibet Rail Line ready for use
www.chinanews.cn 2006-06-14 17:45:29
Chinanews, Qingdao, Jun. 14 C Trains that are made for running on the
Qinghai-Tibet Rail Line were released from their manufacturer, the CSR
Sifang Locomotive and Rolling Stock Co., Ltd. on Tuesday. After a trial
use, the 169 trains will start working on July 1st when the line is
formally kicked off.
As the world's highest and longest railway line, the Qinghai-Tibet
Railway runs through places characterized with less oxygen, frozen soil,
strong ultraviolet radiation, and constant weather changes. The tough
geographical conditions on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau require that trains
running on it should also have some special functions not seen in
passenger trains that run on plains.
Compared with trains on plains, the trains designed to run on plateaus
involve many technology innovations. To counter the discomfort that
people experience when traveling on the plateau, the trains are installed
with two kinds of oxygen supplying systems that can provide additional
oxygen either through a ventilation system, that can raise the oxygen
density to 23.5-25% in the cabin, or through individual masks that have a
higher 40-45% oxygen density.
To protect the ecological environment on the plateau, the trains boast
zero garbage disposal. All the rubbish and waste water on board will
be collected and discharged together.
Meanwhile, the trains are decorated with patterns typically seen in
Tibetan art and culture. Colors such as Tibetan yellow and Tibetan red
are frequently used to show the trains' distinctive regional feature.
Insiders say that production of these trains signifies that China's
locomotive production has climbed to a new level.
